Cory Arrambide

CORY ARRAMBIDE

HOMETOWN: Ventura, CA
AGE: 23
STANCE: Goofy
INSTAGRAM: @cory_arrambide

Possibly the most seasoned competitor in the event, Cory Arrambide knows what it takes to end up on the podium. As a former NSSA National champion and a one-time record holder for the most NSSA wins in a single season (21) Arrambide’s lighting fast backhand and tactical approach in a heat will make him a deadly draw to any and all competitors at the CWC.

DION ATKINSON

HOMETOWN: Adelaide, Australia
AGE: 27
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @dionatkinson

After slugging it out on the ’QS for six years, Australia’s Dion Atkinson has put forth his strongest showing to date this season and is looking strong to qualify. Headed into the Coldwater Classic, the graceful and powerful regular-footer from Adelaide is sitting in the 31st position on the World Rankings, nipping at the heels of World Tour. Although there’s still plenty of time in the season, Dion has to be playing out the different scenarios needed for him to qualify; you can rest assured that a strong showing at the Lane and the sponsorship dollars that accompany a win there are among them.

SHAUN BURNS

HOMETOWN: Santa Cruz, CA
AGE: 21
STANCE: Natural (Regular)

As a Santa Cruz local, 21-year-old Shaun Burns honed his skill in the waters at The Lane. With a strong frame beneath him, Shaun has proven that he can lay it out on rail with the best of them. But not to pidgeonholed as a power surfer alone, when given a ramp, Shaun has no problem taking to the air. With a homefield advantage and plenty of talent, it should be interesting to see just how well this young local stacks up against his competition.

Wade Carmichael

WADE CARMICHAEL

HOMETOWN: Avoca Beach, Australia
AGE: 20
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @wadecarmichael

Wade Carmichael has been on a steady upward trajectory for the past year. After finishing fifth in in the Pro Junior circuit in 2012, Wade made his debut on the ’QS this year. Fresh out of the gates, Wade has proven his mettle on the ’QS by winning a four-star event in Mexico during his maiden year—a notable achievement to say the least for a rookie. Now, with momentum behind him, look for the young Australian to make his mark on his CWC counterparts when competition kicks off.

RICARDO CHRISTIE

HOMETOWN: Gisborne, New Zealand
AGE: 25
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @ricardochristie

Equally adept in big surf or small, New Zealand’s Ricardo Christie is the definition of a complete surfer. After narrowly missing out on World Tour qualification on more than one occasion, Ricardo has managed to keep his spirits high. All the talent and determination are there, he just needs a string of luck—and the backing from a major sponsor—to make the jump into the next level. Look for Ricardo to be displaying his own mix of progressive airs and high-speed railwork at the event.

Hank Gaskell

HANK GASKELL

HOMETOWN: Maui, Hawaii
AGE: 27
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @hippiehanahank

With his mellow outlook and laidback roots, it’d be easy to paint Maui’s Hank Gaskell as a surfer lacking a competitive drive. But if you were to take a look at the lengthy list of competitive accolades bearing his name, you’d quickly realize that there’s a lot more to Hank than his mellow attitude. In the air, Hank’s proven that he can be extremely creative. On rail, Hank holds true to his Hawaiian roots and can lay down a power carve with the best of them. A word to his fellow competitors: Don’t take Hank at face value. Trust us—and the army of top-notch competitors he’s smoked in the past—Hank’s easygoing reputation on land is a far cry from his fiery approach in a heat.

BILLY HOPKINS

HOMETOWN: Huntington Beach, CA
AGE: 21
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @_billyhopkins

About as underground as they come, Billy Hopkins has managed to fly under the radar for far too long. As a wildcard entry, Billy earned his way into the event by dropping one of the most high-flying edits we’ve seen in quite some time. One massive air reverse come to mind specifically. As a freesurfer, there’s no disputing Billy’s prowess above the lip. If The Lane’s producing some ramps during the event, look for Billy to take the sky and take out some of the event’s bigger names.

ANDREW JACOBSON

HOMETOWN: Malibu, CA
AGE: 18
STANCE: Goofy
INSTAGRAM: @andrewjacobson

At 6’ 2”, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Andrew Jacobson’s massive frame would keep him from getting lofty. Not hardly. Despite his size, the Malibu local has proven that—like Jordy and Dane before him—being tall can be a huge advantage when you’re attempting airs. As a goofy foot, Jacobson will be utilizing his deft approach on his backhand when the event gets underway. Look for Andrew to do some damage in both the air and on his rail at The Lane when the event gets underway.

JEREMY JOHNSTON

HOMETOWN: New Smyrna Beach, FL
AGE: 27
STANCE: Goofy
INSTAGRAM: @jermjohnston

One of the most talented-yet-unsung surfers calling New Smyrna, Florida home, Jeremy Johnston has quietly been tearing the life out of lineups across the world for years. Although he’s regarded as an aerial connoisseur, Johnston’s rail game is also razor sharp. In a heat, Johnston has shown that he can hold his own in a heat as well and took home a silver medal in the 2004 ISA games.

SHAUN JOUBERT

HOMETOWN: Mossel Bay, South Africa
AGE: 22
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @shaunjoubert

With Jordy Smith ushering the limelight back upon the coasts of South Africa, a new breed of Zaffa surfers have burst onto the world scene. Among the most talented stands Shaun Joubert. On the pro junior circuit, Shaun made his presence felt time and again. But his biggest achievement to date came recently when he led his fellow South Africans to a gold medal at the ISA Games. His talent is undeniable and his competitive drive runs deep. Look to Shaun to keep up his winning momentum at The Lane when the opening heat horn blows.

NOI KAULUKUKUI

NOI KAULUKUKUI

HOMETOWN: Santa Cruz, CA
AGE: 32
STANCE: Natural (Regular)

Although he’s of Hawaiian descent, Noi is a Santa Cruz local through and through and has forged a solid reputation for himself out at The Lane. Like so many of his counterparts, Noi feels that his best days as a pro surfer are ahead of him. “If I could win this event and get a sponsorship and chase the ’QS again, that could really change my life a lot,” he said. “It could give me a second chance at my dream.” Smooth and stylish, Noi will have both a hometown advantage and droves of fans behind him when he dons a jersey at the Coldwater.

Stuart Kennedy

STUART KENNEDY

HOMETOWN: Lennox Head, NSW, Australia
AGE: 23
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @stueykennedy

Australia’s Stuart Kennedy is no stranger to the Coldwater Classic. In fact, in 2011 Stuart found himself standing tall on the podium with a win at the Coldwater Classic Tasmania. With one Coldwater victory behind him and enough natural talent to make him one of the most talked about juniors in Australia, Stuart could be a very real threat to his competition when he dons a jersey in Santa Cruz in November. Having drawn comparisons to Mick Fanning and known for riding alternative equipment, don’t be surprised to see Stuart turning heads with his board choice and razor sharp approach at the Lane.

Granger Larsen

GRANGER LARSEN

HOMETOWN: Maui, Hawaii
AGE: 23
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @grangerlarsen

Hailing from Maui, Granger Larsen cut his teeth along the perfect point at Honolua. With a seamless and progressive approach, Granger has been battling it out on the ’QS for years, narrowly missing out on World Tour qualification on more than one occasion. As a tried and tested competitor, Granger will bring his steely determination to the frigid waters of Santa Cruz and should be viewed as one of the strongest competitors heading into the comp.

QUINN MCCRYSTAL

HOMETOWN: Huntington Beach, CA
AGE: 23
STANCE: Natural (Regular)

By seamlessly melding power turns and progressive airs, Huntington Beach’s Quinn McCrystal has quietly developed a formidable reputation for himself in Orange County. As a junior surfer, Quinn was a member of the US Surf Team and put together a very strong amateur career. Now, at 23 years old and without a sponsor, Quinn is looking to ignite a new fire in his career. As one of the four wildcard entries into the Coldwater Classic, you can be sure that Quinn will be turning heads when he takes to the frigid waters at The Lane.

TORREY MEISTER

HOMETOWN: Haleiwa, Hawaii
AGE: 25
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @torreymeister

While the Big Island’s Torrey Meister has earned himself a reputation for his carefree attitude on land, in a competitive jersey, Torrey has proven himself to downright lethal. In 2009, as a testament to his comfort in an array of conditions, Torrey finished third in the prestigious Triple Crown. Although he’s only 25, Torrey is a veteran competitor and has proven that he cannot only hang with the best surfers in the world, but that he can beat them as well. Additionally, Torrey’s been an active member of the Surfrider Foundation, working as an advocate to ensure that the world’s beaches and lineups remain pristine.

CHRIS WARING

HOMETOWN: Seal Beach, CA
AGE: 27
STANCE: Natural (Regular)
INSTAGRAM: @waring562

Hailing from Seal Beach, it’s hard to find a chink in Chris Waring’s armor. With a polished style and solid head on his shoulders, Waring boasts a deep power and aerial repertoire. No stranger to the jersey, Waring has been a staple on the junior and ’QS level for years, racking up numerous results in the process. With experience competing at The Lane, Waring could prove to be a very dangerous draw at the Coldwater Classic.
