O’NEILL CWC SERIES 2011 – SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA – ARRIVAL

There is nothing better than the feeling you get en-route to the airport, the excitement of the holiday to come & the thrill of leaving the 9 to 5 in the rearview mirror even if it is just for a week. Since pulling the parachute on my decade surf life & year round tan I’ve been embraced by the brand that filled my pockets and shared my dreams, and although I’ve swapped my 6’0 Stacey for a Macbook Pro I’m finding the next chapter surprisingly fun.
Right now I’m sitting in 49k on Virgin Australia VA001, sharing an arm rest with Mike*, a 40 something youth worker from Tamworth. After the customary small talk it was obvious that Mike was thrilled to be cashing in the problem children for a week of Coors Lite (low carb beer), talk back shows and relaxing at Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel. *I never caught his name.
I guess where I’m headed with this (at 40’000 feet and 3 VB’s) is that we humans don’t really appreciate what we have until it evaporates into a fist full of memories on our Facebook timelines, there to reminisce & the world to see (depending on your security settings). I feel like I did a pretty good job recognizing what I had on tour, making my inevitable migration from the beach to my posture 2.0 chair & cubicle a pinch easier to swallow.
For the next 9 days though I will be appreciating the shit out of everything Santa Cruz has to offer while I’m in town for the final CWC event at Steamer Lane. This week my job description reads: Blogger/commentator/surfer & marrow thief.
*ding (hostess call bell sound) “another VB thanks luv & a couple of bags of those salted cashews”!
