O’NEILL CWC SERIES 2011 – SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA – DAY 5
SUPER FAST JELLYFISH
October 30, 2011. By Jarrad Howse
Six days in a row is stretch for even the most accomplished bloggers. Inspiration starts to wane, ideas vanish & concepts that seemed fun at the start of the waiting period are weighing my lids down.
What thrilled me today was the CWC Series title race. At dawn we had 5 contenders that could pocket the $50k, Brent Dorrington, Adam Melling, Tom Whitaker, Miguel Pupo & Willian Cardoso. To cut a long one short, Dozza had it, Mello wanted to derail Tiago, Willy needed semis & Poops & Tommy were chasing the top rung of the podium to spoil the Dorrington Christmas.
Without fully unveiling the aftermath and spoiling the crescendo I can tell you lunches were cut, Christmas’s were ruined, babies will starve & the last thing I heard from Tommy Whit’s was that he was off to Vegas, Fear and Loathing style.
To be fair the waves sucked today, The Lane was a lake so we were forced North to a HB-esc Waddell Creek. I had my red marker out crossing potentials off the list before the first heat started. Petit lefts with a North wind puffing into it, my green was on Poops.
The kid from Sao Paulo was clinical, precise and inconsiderate to the final 12, butchering them as he went. Three heats & three poor souls needing a pair of 9’s to triumph. Not only did he abseil to the podiums perch he won the event, the series and $90’000 bones for his highflying trouble!
The 2011 CWC will be remembered as the year we crossed the ditch to NZ, Thurso’s pistons fired & Miguel Pupo was the Grinch that stole Christmas!
Until next year, Ciao!
