Surfing has been ingrained in Malia’s blood since she was born. At the age of 2, Malia started surfing with her parents, catching the waves of Kauai. Growing up in Hawaii, she has been influenced by iconic surfers, making her style fluid and graceful, yet incredibly progressive.
Malia fully embraces her culture, including a love for the ocean. She is 100% Aloha! While she loves competing, she is going to do it her way, with a huge smile on her face and the grace of a Hawaiian dancer. True surfers do it to have fun, not for the glory. She does it because she loves it.
In 2008 Malia took dominated the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California, becoming the youngest ever female U.S Open Champion at just 14 years old. Since then Malia has continued to influence the female surfing progression by placing 1st in the US Open Pro Junior in 2009, claiming the cover of TransWorld Surf Magazine in 2011, earning the top qualifier spot for the elite ASP Women’s World Tour in 2012, and claimed the prestigious title of ASP Women’s Rookie of the Year on her first year on the World Tour. Rounding out 2014, Malia finished 5th in the world on the Women’s Samsung Galaxy Championship Tour.
With her 2016 season off to a great start, we can’t wait to see what Malia brings to the tour this year to try and break through the Top 5.
