A few years back, Kelly Slater is running past the Team O'Neill Hawaii house on his way out for a surf. He pauses for a moment to watch a kid rip apart a Eukai right hander and utters, "Wow, who is that kid? He surfs like Tom Curren!" Well that was three years ago and that little kid isn't as little but was and is none other than Luke Davis. Luke has an uncanny mature and perfect style for a 16 year old. He has natural flow that you are either born with or not.
He is a standout amateur competitor winning NSSA events, making finals at Nationals, and is part of the ISA USA surf team, which represents the Nation's top talent. He is showing up in editorial in the magazines and has already been around the world twice surfing some of the planets top waves.
The surf proved to be challenging for the O'Neill
Surfing America Prime presented by Got Milk surf event held at Upper Trestles
this past weekend, however it did not hold back O'Neill surfers from rising to
the occasion and putting on a great display of performance surfing. Luke Davis
was on a tear all weekend leading the pack in the men's 18 and under division.
His surfing was flawless, Davis put on an clinic with unleashing aerials and
reverses at will. Unfortunately for him in the final he found himself to deep
in the line-up and wasn't able to find the link up section on the inside. His
3rd place finish was a solid result and affirms his position as one of the best
under 18 surfers on the West Coast.
Younger brother Jake Davis also put his stamp on the
event by placing 3rd in the under 14 division. On his way to the finals he
racked up some great waves, surfing with power beyond his years asserting
himself as one of the standouts in his category. Also other standout performers where Ian Crane in the
Men's 18 and under reaching the semi finals, Jasset Umbel semis berth in the
girls 18 and under, and Colton Ward reaching the semi finals in the 14 and
under.
This is the 4th event of the season with the finals
ending up at Lower Trestles in June.

O'Neill invades Narrabeen for the World Junior Championships. Get the inside perspective from Nat Young, Luke Davis, Brent Reilly and Sage Erickson leading into the event.
The NSSA West Coast Championships took place this past weekend at the Southside of Huntington Pier and team O'Neill dominated the field. The waves were 2-3 feet and very contestable with nice peaks out the back with a great reform to rip apart on the inside.
In the Open Men's division Capo Beach's Luke Davis took top honors with amazing fluid fins free surfing. He was throwing everything in the book at his fellow competitors to take the crown. He was focusing on the pier bowl rights and surfing the wave with complete precision. He landed big airs, sliced mean cutties, and finished every wave on the inside with a punt or tail slide. He out did a very competitive field featuring Conner Coffin, Christian Saenz, and Parker Coffin.
In an equally impressive Juniors finals we saw San Clemente resident and newly acquired team rider Ian Crane come in with an impressive runner up finish. In the most dramatic finish of the day he busted a one eighty rotation on the biggest wave of the final in the dying moments. He needed a 9.47 for the win but was awarded a 6.8 for a one maneuver wave. The crowd went nuts and it was a great way to end the event and season.
Also in the Juniors finals we saw four time finalist Kanoa Igarashi placing 3rd, who notably posted the highest scores of the event on a consistent basis. He was the only surfer to post a perfect ten throughout the event. He was any amazing competitive dynamo lasting three days of full competition. He reached the finals in four categories with even more amazing double victories in the Menehune division, and Open Boys, then two respective 3rd place finishes in Open Juniors and Explorer Boys.
Other solid performances came from Jake Davis who finished with a very respectable 3rd place in the Open Boys and Kei Kobayashi placed 4th in the Minigrom finals.
Next up to finish off the twenty one event season will be the NSSA Nationals held at Lower Trestles. Event date: June 23-27
