What is it about cold water that really brings out the animal within? If you could have seen Zack Humphrey's this last winter at Off the Wall and Backdoor you would have to say he's got a death wish. He was rushing sick pits and putting his own safety at risk on every wave attempt. Photographer Dave Nelson was impressed. "That kid rushes-I was like whoa-he's gnarly."
It makes sense though, he's from New Jersey where some of the best surf is when there is snow on the ground and it's ten below. Where most people would prefer working on their car or having a hot latte, Zack is getting barreled in Jersey Juice. So when it comes to pulling into a warm backdoor beast, in some weird way it's a holiday for Zack.
He also has a competitive streak that has seen quite a few trophies come his way. He won the East Coast Surfing Championships in both Juniors and Men's in 2006 and he is currently competing on the ASP Junior Pro Tour and selected WQS events
