Roy Powers
BORN TO SURF
Growing up surrounded by the picture-perfect waves of Kauai, Roy Powers never questioned his desire to become a pro surfer. Competing against some of the most talented surfers in the world pushed this regular footer to develop the skills necessary to be a success on the World Tour.
Although he was influenced by other sports such as soccer, where Roy showed great talent as a teenager, surfing was his true calling. Growing up surrounded by a strong waterman tradition, the lure and challenge of riding waves kept Roy on the board through his teenage years. Nicknamed "The Destroyer," Roy came up through the ranks with the Kauai Wolfpack, which taught him the value of brotherhood, honoring tradition, helping others out and standing up for what you believe.
THE POWER OF POSITIVITY
Roy is an athlete who takes his surfing very seriously, but also loves to mingle among the crowds and sign autographs. He is the self-proclaimed "best looking man on the tour," with a keen sense of humor and carefree attitude -- and a love for the 2004 feature film, "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy."
His popularity skyrocketed after winning the 2007 Hawaiian Pro in Haleiwa, in what were some of the heaviest waves seen there in a quarter century. Taking out a heavily stacked list of competitors such as Bede Durbidge and Joel Parkinson, Roy's confidence was boosted as he started the 2008 season. That year was Roy's most successful to date, finishing with a 62% win percentage, bettered only by 10-time champion, Kelly Slater.
While Roy attributes much of his recent success to a new training program, his father was his first major influence. After moving to Kauai to pursue his own surfing career, Roy's dad supported his love of surfing and, to this day, one of Roy's greatest joys in life is joining his father to surf secret spots in and around Kauai.
When Roy is home in Hawaii, he returns to his favorite wave, Pine Trees, and offers advice to the local groms. He knows firsthand about the importance of positive mentors, which is why he has offered his skills to the Hanalei Surf Company and recently started up his own surf school in Kauai.
NO BOUNDARIES
Powers spends his time and energy outside the water working on his golf game or restoring cars. These interests help maintain balance in his life and keep his passion for competitive surfing strong. Some of Roy's goals include winning the Triple Crown and having his name engraved on the Hawaiian Legends Plaque, but his primary objective is to win a world title and enjoy the ride that follows.
Still only in his late 20s, Roy has plenty of time to prove his mettle against the world's best surfers. With his newfound fitness regimen, a positive outlook on competition, and years of experience under his belt, Roy is ready to make a serious statement on the World Tour. Following two Top 10 finishes in 2010, he is looking to regain that early season success as he forges ahead to 2011.
