Kevin Langeree

Biography:

Kevin Langeree is living proof that hard work pays off. As one of the most talented kitesurfers of his generation, Kevin has already spent six years competing on the PKRA World Tour. After finishing in the runner-up spot three years on the trot, the Dutchman finally achieved his goal of becoming PKRA World Tour Champion in 2009. Despite his relatively young age, Langeree's raw natural ability and bottomless reserves of determination have transformed him into one of the sport's most successful and established riders. After joining O'Neill at the age of 13, Kevin has truly paid his dues and earned the respect of his peers, and will no doubt continue to make the most of his time in the limelight. Kevin escapes to South Africa every winter in preparation for the start of the tour, and will be more motivated than ever this year as he attempts to defend the title for which he fought so long and hard.

The 21 year old O'Neill kiteboarder from Noordwijk in the Netherlands had three years previously been runner up to British kiteboarder Aaron Hadlow. And once again it came down to the final event on the tour – the Teri Kite Pro in the warm waters of New Caledonia.

Kevin came second in this final PKRA stop on the World Tour, however it was enough to push long term rival Aaron Hadlow off the top of the rankings and take the World Title.

The young talented kiteboarder isn't going to take it easy from here however. "I'm going to enjoy this victory," said Kevin. "But I will keep training hard. I want to be ready for next year's tour."

HERE'S A LITTLE UPDATE FROM THE WINNER:

"I've been busy celebrating my 1st place here in Germany! It's already the 4th time that the PKRA is held here in St. peter Ording and I was able to win it 3 times in a row!!

We had the perfect conditions on the first day of wind, I was out on my 6m the whole day. It was a classic NorthSea storm and I'm really used to those conditions cause they are the same as at home. That really gave me an advantage to the other riders.

On the day of the singles it was really my day I landed all my trick in every heat I rode so before I knew it I was in the final again! In the final I had to go up against Aaron. Just before the final stared the wind dropped a bit so I toke a bigger size kite and that was a good decision. I landed a double front mobe, double back spin pass, doublesbent pass, a one handed kgb, a switch KGB and some other powered HP's.That was good enough to win the singles.

The next day it looked like it would be the last day with wind so we tried to finish of the doubles. Youri had a 3rd place in the singles in the doubles he was riding really well and kicked Aaron of his 2ndplace. That means that I had to go up against Youri in the finale ofthe doubles. An all Dutch final!

In the beginning it went pretty well but during the end of the heat we both started crashing a bit. In the last minute I still landed a front mobe to blind that really helped me to win that heat!!!!
The next event is in Brazil in October so we have a really long break to train!"

"After a 2nd place in the singles I was pretty motivated to do the doubles and take over first place," Kevin said. "My first heat against Aaron went really well. When we ride against each other we really push it to our limits and the crowd loves it!!"

"For the second heat, we both toke a bigger size kites so we could even go bigger. This is the heat to take every trick out of the bag. The heat started and the wind also picked up. My first trick was a sick blind judge. I also landed a double back spin pass really powered. Overall I had a really good heat and won!! I’m super happy with my win."

Kevin Langeree Interview

Q: What has been the biggest highlight of the past 12 months for you?
A: Winning the world title! I've been training super hard for it the last few years and ended up coming in second place three years in a row. Finally it all came together and I won!

Q: What's the best thing about riding for a living?
A: The best thing about it is being in a position to do what you love to do and also being able to earn some money from your passion as well. It's like a dream come true.

Q: Who do you enjoy riding with the most, and why?
A: I always love riding with all my friends back home. After being on the road for so long, it's just great to come back home and have fun out on the water.

Q: Other than home, where is your favorite place to ride, and why?
A: South Africa. I spent most of my winter down there. The wind howls every single day and the waves are good. So for me, South Africa is just the best possible training ground.

Q: What are your main goals and plans for the next 12 months?
A: I'm really looking forward to riding and competing in what will be my seventh year on the tour. I have to defend my title this time so it's going to be a really exciting year.

Q: How do you see your sport evolving in the next few years?
A: Everyone is going to go bigger and faster, and I also think people will be landing tricks with even more speed.

Q: Have you got any plans to film a new video part, and if yes, with which film company?
A: We are filming Cape Sessions now which is an online documentary about my training life in South Africa. You can check it out on my website.

Q: What do you do for fun when you are not riding?
A: I love being out on the water as much as possible, so if I'm not kiting I'm most likely catching some waves on my surfboard. And if it's flat and there's no wind, I'll be out riding my bike or hiking.

Q: What achievement are you most proud of so far in your career?
A: Winning the world title. It has been a dream of mine from the very beginning when I was starting out. For a dream to become reality is just an awesome feeling!

Q: If you didn't ride for a living, what would you have liked to be doing now for an occupation?
A: That's a really good question. I don't know the answer to that, but I'm pretty sure I'd be doing something in sports because I'm not someone who can sit still for very long.

Q: What trick do you enjoy the most?
A: I love doing one-handed handle passes. Although I think the answer to that question would also depend on the conditions.
