Loris Falquet

Loris Falquet

Biography:

Loris Falquet is an extremely talented freeskier and film-maker, and adds weight to the saying: if you want something done properly, do it yourself. Together with his elder brother Nicolas, Loris has been starring in and producing his own ski movies for the best part of a decade. Noted for their creative angles and imaginative settings, the movies produced by this inspiring double act of brothers have left a lasting mark on skiing's collective consciousness. The Swiss-French brothers even produced and directed Legends, the O'Neill snowboard and ski movie that was released in 2008 to widespread critical acclaim. While a serious back injury sustained on a never-before-skied backcountry line in Switzerland put paid to his 2010 ski season as early as January, Loris continues to work closely with his brother and the rest of their crew on the production of Nomads, their latest film. Documenting a 6-month winter road trip across the European continent, Nomads promises to bring the sport of skiing to a wider audience via a series of weekly webcasts and monthly TV programs. Beyond skiing, Loris can't get enough of the mountains, and is often spotted swimming, climbing and biking in the great outdoors, as well as playing with his young son, Merlin.

Q: What has been the biggest highlight of the past 12 months for you?
A: Skiing new lines in Les Marécottes in Switzerland in January 2010. There was so much snow that I was able to ski down faces that are not usually skiable.

Q: What's the best thing about riding for a living?
A: You always wake up with a smile. I love skiing, I love to think about it and build projects around it so even if the weather's bad or there's no snow, I always have something to do that I love.

Q: Who do you enjoy riding with the most, and why?
A: My brother. We have always ridden together. We share the same passion for skiing and filming.

Q: Other than home, where is your favorite place to ride, and why?
A: In Alaska. I've only been there three times but that place is just pure magic. Even if you're sometimes a little disappointed by the snow condition or the fact you may only ski three days in three weeks, every freeskier just has to experience Alaska.

Q: What are your main goals and plans for the next 12 months?
A: I want to produce a European ski movie featuring all the international superstars!

Q: How do you see your sport evolving in the next few years?
A: What interests me is not the evolution of the sport but what we we can do with this sport and these talents. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is off doing his own small project that gets seen by almost nobody except the kids. I hope we'll find a way to communicate our passion to a larger audience and manage to tempt them back to the snow!

Q: Have you got any plans to film a new video part, and if yes, with which film company?
A: I'm filming almost every good day of the season. My brother and I are producing our own footage.

Q: What do you do for fun when you are not riding?
A: I spend time with my son Merlin, and then I also go biking, climbing, swimming, running, and partying with my friends.

Q: What achievement are you most proud of so far in your career?
A: My biggest achievement is probably just the fact I have become a professional skier. The second would be producing my own ski movies and the third would be to have starred in, produced and directed "Legends", the O'Neill ski and snowboard movie.

Q: If you didn't ride for a living, what would you have liked to be doing now for an occupation?
A: I don't know. I graduated university and was ready to become a sport teacher but I don't think I want to do that now. I also created my own film company called FLK productions but I'm not really sure if I want to do that either! That's freeride!

Q: What trick do you enjoy the most?
A: Mule Kick!
