Duncan Zuur
O'Neill team rider and top international wakeboarder Duncan Zuur is one of the most successful wakeboarders to come out of Europe. After establishing himself as an ever-present threat on the competitive wakeboard scene on both a national and international scale, Zuur has become well-known for pulling off audacious stunts, including wakeboarding across a flooded St. Mark's Square in Venice and carving his way down the narrow canals of Amsterdam. Born in Sydney, Australia, Duncan seems to feel more at home on water than on land - something that his list of accomplishments seems to support. From multiple national championship titles to World Championship medal positions, Duncan is someone you can rely on to perform at his best when the pressure kicks in. Off the water, Zuur enjoys a whole load of other sports including snowboarding, surfing and trial biking. Keep an eye out for this charismatic veteran of the European wakeboard tour as he has absolutely no intention of taking his foot off the pedal.
After four years out of competition in his native Holland, wakeboarder Duncan Zuur made quite a comeback on Saturday.
Known for his stunts wakeboarding through the Amsterdam canals and through the streets of Venice, Duncan took out the Dutch National Championships in Amsterdam on Saturday.
He will now continue to train as he sets his sights on the European Championships.
Q: What has been the biggest highlight of the past 12 months for you?
A: Actually, there quite a few highlights over the course of the past 12 months. One of the biggest highlights took place at the Dutch Nationals in Amsterdam. I hadn't competed in four years, so that victory was a special moment for me.
Q: What's the best thing about riding for a living?
A: The freedom, the fun. The people you meet, the beautiful places on this planet you get to visit, the action. This is my passion!
Q: Who do you enjoy riding with the most, and why?
A: I ride a lot with some of my team mates, and I also have a special group of friends that I like to ride with. It's good to push each other to the limit and beyond. And most of all, it's just so much fun.
Q: Other than home, where is your favorite place to ride, and why?
A: Spain and Italy. There are so many beautiful lakes to ride, and the weather and food there is so good!
Q: What are your main goals and plans for the next 12 months?
A: I have some special projects coming up. This week I'm going to Hungary for an event. Next week I'm going to Orlando to ride with my O'Neill team mates Nils and Marc Kroon. In April, we've got some cool O'Neill events going down. Then in May I'll be going to Italy with my Nautique 230 for camps in Porlezza. As for the rest of the season, it will be full of competitions and I'll also be doing plenty of coaching at my wakeboard school, of course.
Q: How do you see your sport evolving in the next few years?
A: It's getting bigger and bigger. There are lots of new kids coming up! And the recreational scene is also getting bigger. The whole industry is growing in the right way.
Q: Have you got any plans to film a new video part, and if yes, with which film company?
A: I've been talking to the guy from Lieuwma Productions. He's planning to produce a new wakeboard movie so we'll see what happens this year!
Q: What do you do for fun when you are not riding?
A: I like to have fun with my two girls back home, ah… my wife and daughter. And I love to play ice hockey - it's such an active sport!
Q: If you didn't ride for a living, what would you have liked to be doing now for an occupation?
A: I think that I would have probably inherited my father's business. It's always difficult to say when it's a case of "what if?"
Q: What trick do you enjoy the most?
A: I don't have a specific trick in mind, but I still like the big raley tricks an the spins. So good!
