Ane Enderud
After making her first tentative turns on snow at the tender age of two, Norway's Ane Enderud was destined to make a career for herself in skiing. Despite bashing gates and racing the clock during her childhood, the call of the big mountains and powder snow proved too much. Ane abandoned ski racing and decided to move to the freeride mecca of Chamonix to pursue a career that was altogether steeper and deeper. Since moving to France, Enderud has become one of the world's best and most respected freeskiers, traveling all over the globe to showcase her skills in the big mountain environment. Ane established her presence at the forefront of the freeriding scene in 2009 when she captured the Freeride World Tour title in only her first year on tour. This creative Norwegian freeskier continues to divide her time between competing on the Freeride World Tour and shooting photos and filming for her sponsors. In her time outside of skiing, Ane is always keen to spend as much time as possible either back home in Norway or down at the beach with some good friends.
Q: When did you start skiing and why?
A: I started skiing when I was 2 years old cause Norwegians are born with ski on ;-) My parents brought me to our cabin out of town in the weekends and holidays so it was either cross country or alpine skiing on the agenda.
Q: What has been the biggest highlight of the past 12 months for you?
A: Exploring Norway! Cause of lack of snow everywhere last season I spent a lot of time exploring and riding my home country for the first time. From the beautiful fjords and mountains on the west coast, the wild nature and life in the north to finalize the hole thing sailing and riding Spitsbergen. So sick and wild!
Q: What's the best thing about riding for a living?
A: To be able to continue riding a lot and have the chance to travel to new places and play in the nature.
Q: What's your most embarrassing moment?
A: Ahh wow I don't remember. Must have been many.
Q: Who do you enjoy skiing with the most, and why?
A: I like skiing with riders with the same approach to the mountains. Friends who likes the same style of riding. Its important also to know what kind of risks the ones I ride with are willing to take, specially in Chamonix.
Q: Which skier inspires you the most?
A: I never had one specific person as my inspiration. I get inspired by the riders around me and my friends that I have fun with and who keep on pushing each other. Many riders out there are doing inspiring things at different times.
Q: Other than home, where is your favorite place to ski, and why?
A: Chamonix, It feels like my riding home. It's where I discovered freeriding and is where I base myself out most winters.
Q: What are your main goals and plans for the next 12 months?
A: Get some good shooting done in some locations that inspires me. Chamonix is great this winter so its a good base and I stoked to have more time here again. my 2 other trip locations, Alaska for my first time and Svalbard are looking good to so I am really exited. Maybe also get myself over to South America for late summer, last season I cancelled to get some time in Norway for a change and some proper rehab. And not to forget surfing! Its been 1,5 years, its not a good thing, need to get back in that mode.
Q: How do you see your sport evolving in the next few years?
A: Its a huge competition focus and more people than ever fight to get on the circus. I think we will still see more and more mix of backcountry and freeriding who expanded a lot last years. And I think a good amount wants to take it more back to the roots, ski some proper big mountains and get away from the resorts and the circus and do exiting trips to odd locations.
Q: Have you got any plans to film a new video part, and if yes, with witch film company?
A: So far I decided to go for Chaoz Production again. I like the idea of only filming in Norway and its an up and coming European production I believe in. I am also going to take part in a Australian produced TV series who also will be published in shows all over. Other than that I'm working on my own project, try to produce something that fits my life. Ongoing work can be seen in online episodes.
Q: What do you do for fun when you are not skiing?
A: Hang out with friends doing some activities is what I like most and then gather up for nice dinners. A mellow day surfing or biking in the mountains, being outdoor in any way with a good crew is what I love most.
Q: What achievement are you most proud of so far in your career?
A: Obviously winning the Free ride World Tour the two times I entered was big for me.
Q: If you didn't ski for a living, what would you have liked to be doing now for an occupation?
A: Surf! Haha, next life! Guess I would have been an architect by now if I didn't fell so hard in love with skiing big mountains.
Q: What trick do you enjoy the most?
A: Not really a trick specialist, stopped park riding totally after my last big crash. And haven't flipped backcountry for years. My trick is ski fast and hard down a mountain.
Q: What's your favorite ski resort?
A: Chamonix.
Q: What music you listen to?
A: All kinds except hard rock and techno, it depends a lot on my mood.
Q: Has skiing ever injured you and what's the worst injury?
A: I thought my two ACL was the worst until I injured my hip, back, neck and shoulder in one go couple of summers ago. Didn't give and skied to early to defend my title and I did. You can see the crash in my episodes soon.
