Despite today’s focus on fashion conscious designs, the invention of the boardshort had a rather functional motivation. In the early years of surfing, people wore long cotton shorts to protect themselves from rashes occurring from paddling and sitting on waxed surfboards. Since then, boardshorts have continued to improve in functionality as well as style: Ultra -light and stretchy materials like polyester and elastane provide comfort and flexibility, while technical features like O'Neill Hyperdry, ensure that our boardshorts dry super quickly.
As pioneer in the history of surfing, O'Neill had a big share on the development of those high-tech surf shorts. Boardshorts became ultra-light and flexible, which also found their way to non-surfers suitcases. The latest boardshorts development from O'Neill is related to sustainability: boardshorts for cleaner waves - literally! O'Neill launches the first boardshorts this summer, made from ocean plastic with bionic yarn. There are three different types of boardshorts available: Technical, Hybrid and Regular. Technical boardshorts are designed to be surfed. They will give you the most possible flexibility while drying in the blink of an eye. To protect your skin even more, technical boardshorts tend to be a bit longer than swim shorts. Our Hybrid boardshorts are made for both, on- and offshore. You can just hike to a secret surf spot and enjoy riding waves without even changing your shorts. Our Regular boardshorts are less flexible, more durable, but still surf-able! No matter which type you prefer, all our boardshorts are available in different colours and prints - let's be honest: style in the waves matters!
